School got out at 11:30 on 9/16/13 for a "teaching team
preparation day." Dad was off work so he decided we should
go get some wood for FHE before winter sets in. The farmer's
almanac predicts an unusually cold winter with heavy snowfall.
Our permit was for the Nebo Loop, so we just drove up a little dirt road,
and turned around. We started with an ominous empty trailer!
The saw is fueled and oiled---so let the adventure begin!
Dad finds a dead standing tree and cuts out a wedge near the bottom.
The tree is starting to tip! TIMBER!!!! It is on its way down!
Dad cut the tree up in lengths. My job was to
load them up and stack them in the trailer.
Next we found a huge tree trunk that was already down.
The chips began to fly! And fly!
We got TEN sections from this tree. They were super
heavy and I had to load them one at a time.
Dad next cut three small standing trees. These trees were in the
remains of the recent mud slide due to all the rain we've had.
We decided to pull them out to the road with the truck and avoid the knee high mud.
When Dad pulled the third tree, it got lodged in the fork of the second one and he was
able to pull them both out onto the road. He couldn't do that again for any amount of money!
We got one whole tree on the stand, but I had to balance it and
hold it down while Dad trimmed sections off the ends.
Last of all we found this big tree right by the road. :)
Dad is notching the bottom. He and I both felt an uneasy
feeling about this tree. Dad decided to throw a hook and
cable up over one of the branches and attach it to the truck to assure
it fell the right way. NOTE: You'll notice no pictures were taken of
this tree coming down. As soon as Dad got the cable taut, the whole
kit-n-kaboodle came down and I had to ran for my life!
Dad just went to work on it.
Our load continued to grow as the hours ticked away!
The chips continued to fly and I kept hauling the sections over and stacking them.
After 4 hours of intense labor, the trailer was pretty well load.
This shot documents that Dad was not alone. We're an old team,
but we've still got it. This jag of wood is proof!
