Quick history of the jail:

1877: James Browning bought property for $1500.
His family lived there for over 30 years.
1903: The Church, under Joseph F. Smith's direction, purchased
the property fro $4000, approximately the cost of the original construction.
1903-1938- The property was leased/rented to individuals for residential use.
1938: Joseph and Eunice McRae were sent to supervise the
restoration to its 1844 appearance.  They stayed for 20 years.
1963: A visitor's center was constructed on the property.
1989- Major renovation was made to the property and
then the site was dedicated on June 27, 1989.

                                              Malea
The cell where Joseph, Hyrum and the others would have been had the jailer not
offered his own room. All would have been killed had they been in here.
The jailer's bedroom, where the martyrdom took place.

All listened intently as we heard the dramatization of the last minutes of Joseph's mortal life.

The original door with the bullet hole from the slug that took Hyrum's life.
The window from which the Prophet Joseph jumped in an effort
to save the lives of the other men with him.

The prophet was shot and killed as he jumped.
His body would have landed near here.

The Testimony that was sealed with blood.

"Standard of Truth has been erected; no unhallowed hand can stop the work from progressing; persecutions may rage, mobs may combine, armies may assemble, calumny may defame,
but the truth of God will go forth boldly, nobly, and independent, till it has penetrated
every continent, visited every clime, swept every country, and sounded in every ear,
till the purposes of God shall be accomplished and the Great Jehovah shall say
THE WORK IT DONE!" Joseph Smith JR.
