big rain

The annual Labor Day  O.D. and Mary Marvin Family Reunion 

was held on Sept. 7, 2013 at the pavilion at Spring Lake.

We noted the dark clouds gathering on our way up, but a 

text from Grandpa Marvin assured us it was hot and dry in Payson.  

Apparently we took the severe weather with us. :)

We hadn't been there long when a huge clap of thunder announced 

the cloud burst! Monsoon type winds sent a chilling mist in on us 

even though we were in the very center of the pavilion.

The rain was unbelievable for Utah.  Reports say the first 15 minutes

brought 3/4 of an inch!  Within an hour, 1 1/2  inches had fallen!

The rain was so heavy that it obscured the mountains in the background.

Notice how the mountains appeared as the rain began to let up.

Rain was only part of the total experience. There was

 yummy lasagna, soft- hard rolls and fresh peach pie!

that gathered in the hollow just west of Grandpa Marvin's house.

This is a hijacked picture as well.  It is the Church on the Highway 

between Payson and Spring Lake.  We drove through this "puddle".  

Two cars thought it would be fun to puddle duck through it.  Both 

drowned their cars out and got to sit in it until someone could rescue them.

No!  We didn't try to puddle duck!

Nearly every corner had flood water because the drains could not 

gather it fast enough.  This is where we turn down Utah Ave. to go to 

Grandma Anna's house, in front of the old Payson Movie Theater. 

Spanish Fork didn't fair a lot better.  Can you see the Macey's 

sign in the background?  We were on our way to Costco! 

Apparently Provo and Orem got hit hard as well.

As fun as the storm was for us.  Many homes ended up with water 

in their basement. Austin's restoration business had every truck out 

all night long sucking water from the homes flooded.  ):

Once was not enough for Spanish Fork.  They got hit again on Sept. 13th!

These kids decided to make the most of a bad situation! 


 Andrea had a job interview with "Sports Cuts" that day and drove through
this big puddle.  This car is on the road that passes Maceys and Cosco.  Andrea was
lucky enough to go through behind a big truck and fared better than this car.

Rock Climbing with Will 9/6/13

I had a bus run with the Cross-country team on Sept. 6th, and Dad
was at work, so Colton and Malea were their own activity directors.  

Colton made arrangements for his former mission companion, 

Will Clark, to take them and Andrea rock climbing in Provo Canyon. 

This is Will heading up the trail with the needed equipment. 

This is the area where they made their climb.

Will got all the equipment organized, while Andrea watched with interest.

Will was the first up the rock wall so he could place the safety hooks every five feet.

Will is placing the hook at about 10 feet. Once the hooks are in place
someone can act as a belay to protect the climber from falling. :)

By the time Andrea got a turn.  It was dark!  She climbed by

 the light of a head lamp.  Just for the record----she made

 it to the top!   NOTE:  No pictures were taken of Malea's ascent

 as it was more a hoisting experience than an actual climbing one.  :)

Beauty School strikes again! 9/5/13

Who knew you can have your eye lashes permed?  If you didn't---

you're in good company.  Apparently it's not a common practice 

at this point.  Andrea is the only student certified to do it and she 

taught herself using the tutorial DVD's.  Only one of the instructors 

has ever done it!  Malea decided to be Andrea's third Victim!

One foam rod is used for each eye.

The lashes are actually glued to the rod.

Then comes the pink waving lotion.

There is nothing "pretty" about this process, so they make the chemicals lovely colors.

Malea's lashes were very perm resistant so the processing time as longer than usual.

  The blue stuff is the neutralizer or setting lotion. 

The final steps include a clear nourishing lotion, and a 

clear glue removal liquid so the rods can be removed.

Provo Temple Trip with Colton and Malea 9/5/13

I had Tory C. lined up to take my afternoon bus run on Sept. 5th, so 

we decided to go to Provo Temple.  Colton and Malea were able to

 serve as the witness couple of the first time.  We also saw Grandpa

 Marvin following the session. He was checking the names before the

 men headed up to the chapel.  We also enjoyed lunch in the temple cafeteria.

Utah has had some spectacular clouds recently.

No temple experience is complete without the flowers!

Cove Fort and Fremont Indian Park with Colton and Malea 9/4/13

We had planned to go to the temple on Wednesday, Sept. 4th, 

but due to some unexpected circumstances we decided to go to 

Cove Fort and the Fremont Indian Park instead.

Colton, Malea and Mom are in front of the little log cabin that President 

Hinckley's grandfather's family lived in.  It was brought to this location 

from Colesville, Utah. We watched the introductory film inside this cozy home.

Colton tried something cool with his camera and Malea became rather translucent!

Malea is inside the kitchen/dining room or hub of the home.

This photo takes in the big garden, ox loading shoot, ice house and hay derrick.

Colton and Malea inspect our guides purse which had been crocheted from shopping bags.

Our guide read this cute little poem,  "As our ancestors walked to the Promised Land, 

many of the youth walked hand in hand.Some fell in love and wanted to marry, 

but money and jewelry they did not carry.A kind young blacksmith knew what to do. 

He bend the nail from an old horse shoe.The "prairie diamond" was the name he gave.  

Many a marriage it did save.!  written by  Gerald and Beth Clark.

Then Colton, who is a great sport,  proposed anew with the "prairie diamond."

Malea shows off her lovely new ring!  Our tour had ended so we had our 

picnic under the apple trees before heading to our next destination.

The Fremont Indian Park Visitors' center is nestled in this little cove.

This is a replica of the inside of a pit house, the main dwelling of the Fremont Indians.

Malea had to try out the ladder that lead from the under ground house to 

ground level.  It was reminiscent of her cameo appearance in the movie

 still shown at the park, when she emerged from the pit house just east 

of the visitor's center.   Malea was in third grade at the time it was filmed.  

She appears in the introductory film four times!

The bench Malea and Colton are sitting on is made of logs.  

The split log on top was highly polished and very beautiful.

This Fremont Indian woman model was constructed using an actual 

skeleton found as a reference. These Indians were small people.

Malea bought some dried corn from a little machine and 

tried her hand at making cornmeal as the Indian women did.

I loved this painted mural in the visitor's center.  

How many heads or faces can you see?

There are literally thousands of hieroglyphics in this area.  Here is a sample.

Mom and Malea in the Indian tent.  The Fremont Indians 

didn't use these, but the tourists enjoy them.
